Mountainworks took shape in the 1970’s when Founding Principal Mike Larson began working as part of the operations team at Vail Mountain and later as the Director of Planning for Vail Resorts.

During his time with Vail Resorts Mike was a key member of the master planning team for the undeveloped Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead resort complex.  With this initial vision as the foundation, these interconnected areas have since set an international benchmark for ski area and four-season resort development, as well as ski in / ski out real estate.

As the planning director of Vail Resorts he was also responsible for the governmental approval, design documentation, project budgeting, field layout, construction oversight, and post-completion evaluation of all resort projects. This included the design and implementation of several thousand acres of trail construction and numerous lift installations, as well as the long-term master plans for Vail, Breckenridge, and Keystone Resorts.

Mike went on to direct Vail Consultants, an internationally recognized resort planning and consulting group.  During this time he was responsible for the master planning of major resort destinations in Japan, Norway, Sweden, Australia, Argentina, Canada, and the United States.  Mike and his role with Vail Consultants later transformed into International Alpine Design and set out to provide diversified offerings and team members. The firm has since established a reputation as one of the worlds most recognized and trusted mountain resort planning firms, recently forging a partnership with planning firm Design Workshop to become Mountainworks.
